I have the occasional concept for a cartoon or illustration. They usually come to mind while driving or even discussing things in depth. I could draw them, but since I never have actually done that anytime I thought of it before, I should probably see if I can come up with a way to at least make an initial draft.
So the cartoon is as follows:
Option A
How the Dalai Lama orders a drink
6 Panels
Panel 1
Man standing at counter, details are suggestive of a sandwich shop, an employee is behind the counter
Panel 2
How Can I Help You?
Panel 3
I would like a coke, please
Panel 4
What size
Panel 5.
Medium, please
Panel 6
(soda passed, close-up of hand)
Thank You
Option B
Single Panel ala The Far Side
How the Dalai Lama Orders A Drink
Same Scene as Previous concept
Dalai Lama: I’d like a medium coke
First Attempt:
Performed a search for “Panel Cartoon Maker” and then realized it’s “Online Comic Maker” ( Multiple panels make up a comic, duh)
The first service I tried with no research was “Pixton”
They claimed I could try for free, I selected a Business plan (since I am not a registered student or educator)
Signed up via Facebook in a single click and then started using there cartoon maker
The first surprise was a collection of backgrounds to select from, it is a well thought out tool for quick comic creation and I had my first draft in ten minutes.
First Draft of making a comic concept using Pixton
10 Minute Review of Pixton Comic App
I ended up with a woman with a dress, the customization options are similar to most character builders or as you may know them “Bitmoji” makers. I did not have a clear path to “man wearing a robe” or any suggestiveness of being Asian. Probably two issues the average comic maker isn’t overly concerned about. I wasn’t concerned either, but it definitely seems best to not have too much of the character concept locked down. If you want a Cop and a Clerk, you can do that fairly easily.
The scenarios (called Actions) for the two characters to be posed in didn’t allow for someone to be behind the counter, so all scenarios seemed strange for a “Store” template and could have been limiting if I had any strict requirements.
I think I would like this tool for creating business infographics but I require a bit more flexibility than I found in my non-tutored, ten minute run through of the tool.
